By Steven Keehner “11 seconds. You've got 10 seconds. The countdown going on right now! Morrow, up to Silk. 5 seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”-Al Michaels, 1980 Winter Olympics Whether it was the US Hockey Team in 1980, Appalachian State in 2003, or Leicester City in 2016: an underdog defying the odds is always sweet. Allow me to show you another: I WON A GAME! A REAL (not literally) GAME! I had been leading for most, if not all of this week, that is until Sunday night. Between Aaron Rodgers and Matt Bryant’s combined 32.5 points, my opponent took a small lead of just 2.6 points. Me being the unaware idiot that I am, I assumed that my chance of winning had flown away. This was until I realized that I had one player that was yet to play: Ameer Abdullah. For reasons I’m not sure about, I was still concerned that something would go wrong. Whether it was some magical injury or just a poor performance. But 8.6 points later, I can happily say my team played well, and I won! In case you didn’t notice, I dropped Beasley for Marquise Lee. What surprised me was how great my new signings were; between the eight new players I brought in, they combined for 101.1 points! My team is taking shape! This is something that I thought would take at least a few more weeks to see; it goes to show that if you play the Waiver Wire correctly, you can build a team capable of winning a game! I can’t take full credit for my win, Fantasy Football is a game of luck after all. Led by Jordan Howard, many of my opponents’ players under-performed, but that’s Fantasy for you! Excluding the win itself, I think the bright point, or rather points, can be found on my bench: Chris Thompson and Javorius Allen. I’m still not sure why I started Allen in my other league but not in this one, but regardless, he had a fantastic game, as did Thompson. Between their combined 46.7 points, I see a lot of potential with this combo for the rest of the season. To think that they were sitting in the Free Agent List… But now that I went through this past week’s game, we can look forward to this week’s game! Let’s go over the newest members of the 69er Gang! Old Player/New Player Zay Jones/J.J. Nelson I wanted Zay Jones to work out, I really did. But between the fact that Buffalo isn’t looking too great on the passing side of the ball and the unfavorable match-up against Denver, it made it easy to go for J.J. Nelson. He’s ranked second in fantasy amongst WR and with John Brown questionable, I see no reason why Nelson can’t continue his already strong season and help me gain a few more wins! Kerwynn Williams/Chris Carson I well knew that Kerwynn Williams could’ve easily not panned out, “With the respective player(s) ahead of them going down, I see no issue with taking two flyers that might pay off.” While I was wrong about the possible upside of Williams, I called him a flyer, so I’m not that disappointed or concerned about dropping him. With Chris Carson however, I’m conflicted. On one hand, you have a guy looking like he will be the RB1 for Seattle for the foreseeable future. But on the other hand, Seattle has a weak offensive line and many RB options around him who at any moment can overtake him, whether it is Rawls, Prosise, or even Lacy. I want to call this signing a flyer, but who knows. Phil Dawson/Graham Gano Just another Kicker Stream, nothing to see here. Coby Fleener/Jimmy Graham I seriously can’t believe that Jimmy Graham was dropped! Coby Fleener has been great, but I feel like this is an opportunity that I couldn’t ignore. While the Seahawks are in a bit of a rough patch at the moment, this is still a fantastic signing for a team of my quality! I don’t think I need to point out what Graham has, and what he could accomplish. Although Graham is questionable this week, so there’s a chance that I may have to end up making a signing that you guys won’t find about next week. With the discussion about the new signings done, let’s look at Week Three! Just like last week, FantasyPros has me getting my ass kicked. But just like last week, these are just projections. I do expect to lose this week. It’s not even that I don’t believe in my team, it’s that my opponent is has some favorable match ups this week (Parker vs NYJ, Ertz vs NYG, etc). Unless my defense can somehow put up 100 points, seeing myself drop to 1-2 shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. But who knows, maybe I can get lucky and sneak out another victory! Next, we’ll be looking at a new section where we take a look around the league! I feel like adding this will give you (the reader) a better feeling of inclusion into my league. While it sucks not knowing/communicating with anyone, we can still look at the results and stats! Here are the results of the Week Two games and League Standings! It’s clear from the highlighted section that my team is not a powerhouse and that I’m extremely lucky. We are tied for second; if that means nothing, you’re right, it’s only Week Three, but I’m still proud! Week Two was a massive improvement from Week One; I went from having a bunch of random to players to now where I see a potential team taking shape, and it’s really exciting!
In Part Four, I will explain how Week Three went, going through the new signings for that week, taking another look around the league, and previewing my Week Four match-up!
