By Steven Keehner David Johnson, Le'Veon Bell, and Julio Jones. What do all three players have in common? They’re all considered the “Go-To” top picks in drafts this season. When thinking of our favorites aspects of Fantasy Football, we look toward the draft. We spend weeks, months even, watching tape, discussing, and evaluating every player. Just so when the draft comes around, we can hope to find that one player, that one diamond in the rough that can lead us to glory. But as many experienced players know, no fantasy league is won on Draft Day; while having your studs secured is helpful, it’s the moves you make through the Waiver Wire and by trading that can make a Champion. So I was thinking, is it possible for somebody to win a league without drafting any players at all? A few minutes later, I was in a random ESPN league draft lobby and ready to embark on this experiment! I went for a basic 10-team PPR league. I queued the lowest ranked players, and the draft began! With the third pick in the draft, Doug Flutie’s 69er Gang selects…. Younghoe Koo? I immediately saw the league chat messages pop up. I felt it was only fair to inform the nine other players what I was going to do; they were surprisingly not angry. They thought it was funny though, doubting that it could ever work, and I couldn’t blame them. After my short conversation, I set myself to auto draft and watched my "dream team" come to fruition. I will be replacing all these players with the best of the rest, the undrafted players. For one reason or another, these players were not seen as good enough to be taken, that's where I come in. For the sake of this post’s length, I will not be listing all the players that were selected for my team. If you’d like to know who I "drafted", I’ll add them in the comments if requested. For now, I’ll just name the likely roster that will bring me into Week One: To be honest, I don’t think my team is that bad. In a 10-team league, this is by far the worst team, but it still looks a lot better than what I had expected. Trade wise, I’m hoping either Rivers or Dalton can gain value, enough to where I can trade them for "profit". I’m also hoping that Zay Jones pans out for what is looking to be a mediocre Bills team, he could be a massive trade piece. Also, in the first few weeks of the season, somebody always panics and drops a valuable player; the key is for me to realize it and use it to my advantage! I think with a few good signings and a lot of pieces falling my place, this team could win me a couple of games! Now that the introduction to the experiment is done, we can talk about the actual testing. Let's start with Week One! While I know that projections are practically worthless, it is still interesting to see that there isn’t that big of a gap between the two of us. Despite this, I’m still clearly the heavy underdog, but I’m expecting this to last for the first few weeks of the season. Hopefully, I can take advantage of the worst team getting dibs on whoever they want first and I can possibly begin to build up my team.
In the next installment, I’m going to be explaining how Week One went, adding the best highlights from my players, going through the new signings for that week, and previewing my Week Two matchup!
